What goes into biodynamic farming?
A very clear understanding that the farm is one giant, living organism and that it must be treated as so… and that all actions are interconnected. The farm through technical methods of feeding, seeding, and harvesting are done according to the principles laid out by Rudolph Steiner and the organization that regulates this certification Demeter. It entails a “closed loop” system where everything used is made on the farm without the purchase of any external inputs (fertilizers, etc.), so the use and care of animal livestock plays a crucial role on a biodynamic Farm.
How is it different from regular farming?
It greatly differs as to be “organic” simply entails not using toxic pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides which should be the standard in general, but since we are far from it, it is a great starting point. And that’s just what it is for biodynamics… from there, the farming practices utilize the insights of astronomy and astrology to work with the celestial elements that are active at the time to make the best decisions for cultivating. A biodynamic farm creates and feeds the soil nourishing preparations, and does everything needed to create a deeply rich microbial life as the soil is thought of as the “blood” of the farm. It practices crop rotation, no tilling, and the creation and use of biodynamic compost made on the farm. None of these are asked upon to be Certified Organic. The overall method is “regenerative” as we are now way past simply being “sustainable”.
What led you to Zenbunni chocolates?
It was simply making a delicious and healthy chocolate for ourselves once we learned and committed to living a clean and nontoxic life. We never had any intention of manufacturing and selling chocolate. 10 years ago, raw organic chocolates were quite rare and what was out there didn’t taste like what chocolate should taste like in the European tradition, so we wanted to create something that tasted incredible but was healthy… and everyone that tasted it encouraged us to sell it… it took many nudges, and we finally gave in after so many requests… and that was 10 years ago…
How can biodynamic farming save the world?
Because it’s “regenerative” it improves soil health and the land in total with its manner of growing everything. Healthy, vital land helps sequester carbon from the atmosphere, known as “carbon farming” – a true, scientifically-proven way to reduce global warming.

How do the planets, sun, and the moon effect biodynamic farming?
They actually effect all living beings: human, plant, and animal… biodynamics pay close attention to these celestial influences and work in harmony with them to yield the greatest synergistic outcome. This level of understanding and practice is not used in any other manner of farming in the world.
What do you love most about biodynamic farming?
It’s dedication to working in harmony with all living creatures and the subtle influences of our planets. And that it’s all a much deeper relationship with not only your land but within one’s self as a way of being consciously.
